It's impossible to write down everything that's happened at Sensible Music over the years, but here are just a few highlights of historical moments, album releases, recordings, and clients that have trusted us with their work.
New Owners
In 2024, founder Jeff Allen retired and sold off Sensible Music to new owners Grace Hayhurst and Shelby Logan Warne. With a vision to re-vamp the studio and bring it into the present day, the duo are now working hard to bring Sensible Music to life. Still offering the same set of core services as Sensible always has done, mixing, mastering, recording, rehearsing, and backline hire, Sensible's future is as bright as ever.
Example recording mixing and production ‘Playing in the Shadows’
Example worked with Sensible for a number of years on their material, most notably with album Playing in the Shadows.
Amy Winehouse: Back To Black
Quite possibly the most well known record that Sensible has had a hand in is Back to Black from the late Amy Winehouse. For many years Amy used Studio 4 as her rehearsal, writing, and recording space. In-house engineer Jon Moon worked with Amy on a number of singles, as well as recording her vocals in what is now Studio A.
Libertines record ‘Can’t stand me now’ in Studio 3
Peaking at number 2 in the UK singles chart, hit single Can't stand me now was recorded at Sensible Music.
Van Morrison Location Recording
Over the years, one of Sensible Music's business ventures included on-location concert recordings. They recorded many artists, from Nina Simone to Enter Shikari. In 2001, they had the opportunity to record Van Morrison
Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones): A Stones' Throw
Founder and owner of Sensible at the time Jeff Allen had a long standing relationship with Mick Taylor. Having drummed for him for many years on various tours, Mick frequently came to Sensible Music to work on his solo records. A Stones' Throw was just one of many that was produced at Sensible.
Michael Jackson: Mixing and Post Production
With an on location international recording for the Brunei Royal Family, Michael Jackon's live performance was mixed and mastered at Sensible Music in Studio A.
Spice World (The Spice Girls Movie Soundtrack)
The mixing and mastering of the Spice World movie was done in Studio A at sensible music during this time. In-house engineer Tony Tavener in fact worked with the Spice Girls during this time on other singles too such as Stop.
East 17 Move in to Studio 1
Going on to create Resurrection on our premises, East 17 were one of the first artists to reside at Sensible Music in our long term lease production suites.
Elton John: Mixing and Post Production
With an on location international recording for the Brunei Royal Family, Elton John's live performance was mixed and mastered at Sensible Music in Studio A.
Sensible Moves to Brewery Road
In 1994, Sensible moved from Blundell Street, the now home of Tileyard, to Brewery Road, it's current home. With the construction of several production suites, as well as a premier mixing, mastering, and recording studio (Studio A), Sensible was now poised to support the recording business, as well as the hire business.
Sensible Music Limited Begins
Jeff Allen and Dennis Weinrich found Sensible Music together as a hire company for studio and backline equipment.
